Studying in countries like the UK, the US and Australia is a dream for many. Home to many universities ranked among the world’s top 50 institutions (QS World University Ranking), these institutions offer highly recognised degrees that are sought-after in many industries.
However, high tuition and living costs often force students to abandon these aspirations. For instance, an undergraduate degree in the UK can cost between £11,000 and £40,000 per year, a hefty amount for the average international student.
But don’t give up on your dream just yet! If you aspire to earn an international degree from a prestigious country but lack the financial freedom, consider studying in Malaysia.
As a leading educational hub in Southeast Asia, Malaysia has become a prime destination for international students to pursue their studies. Beyond being a vibrant and inclusive country for students worldwide, Malaysia also offers an affordable pathway to achieving your educational aspirations through Transnational Education (TNE).
TNE enables students to enroll in courses from renowned international universities and receive a foreign degree while studying in Malaysia. Students gain the flexibility to explore their options, whether it be completing a foreign degree in Malaysia or starting their education here and then transferring overseas to a partner university to finish their degree. This option proves ideal and enticing for many as it allows students to save on tuition and living expenses.
TNE comes in various formats including twinning programmes, credit transfer, franchised programmes, dual degree programmes, and branch campuses, providing flexible options to meet diverse educational needs and goals.
Twinning programmes
Twinning programmes are international programmes that are offered by a local partner institution. Upon completion of coursework, students will graduate with a degree awarded by a foreign partner university.
Students commence their studies in Malaysia and, depending on the selected course, have options to finish the remainder of their programme overseas at a partner university. Students can opt for 1+2 (1 year in Malaysia, 2 years abroad), 2+1 (2 years in Malaysia, 1 year abroad) or 3+0 (3 years in Malaysia).
The University of Central Lancashire’s 3+0 programme at SEGi University offers an irresistible programme of study for students seeking a UK degree. Some available programmes include Bachelor of Business Management (Hons) and Bachelor of Education.
Credit transfer
Credit transfer programmes involve the recognition of credits earned in Malaysian universities towards a degree in an international institution. The university where a student completes most of their coursework usually awards a degree.
For example, Infrastructure University Kuala Lumpur (IUKL) allows students to transfer their credits to esteemed institutions such as Deakin University (Australia) and the University of Southern Queensland (Australia).
Franchised programmes
Franchising is another prevalent form of TNE in Malaysia. This involves an international institution granting a Malaysian university the authority to deliver its curriculum. Students enrolled in franchised courses can obtain a degree from a renowned international university while studying exclusively in Malaysia.
For instance, INTI International University offers a franchise programme from Coventry University (UK) which includes courses in disciplines such as Engineering, Business, and Computing. Students will earn a degree from Coventry University upon graduation.
Joint and dual degree programmes
Joint and dual degree programmes entail collaborations between Malaysian and foreign universities, where both institutions jointly develop and teach the curriculum. Typically, students will be awarded degrees from both institutions and have the flexibility to study entirely in Malaysia or complete part of their studies at a partner institution overseas.
As an example, the joint programme with De Montfort University (UK) and Asia Pacific University offers students a unique and comprehensive educational experience that blends the strengths of both institutions and degrees awarded from both universities.
Branch programmes
Malaysia hosts numerous branch campuses of reputable institutions such as Curtin University Malaysia and the University of Nottingham Malaysia. These campuses provide the same curriculum as their home campuses in Australia and the UK, along with opportunities for student exchanges or credit transfers. Students can experience a global education without having to leave Malaysia.
Enhanced employability and mobility
Because Malaysia’s TNE programmes are affiliated with reputable universities from Australia, the UK and the US, their degrees greatly increase a graduate’s employability and open many doors for global mobility. The international recognition validates the calibre of education obtained, providing students with a competitive edge and cultivating a global outlook - all of which are highly valued in today’s interconnected world.
Gain an international qualification without the financial burden by starting your tertiary education in Malaysia!
