Applying for study visas has become more difficult for Pakistani students due to stricter limits on study permits and an increasing number of rejections.
In Canada for example, there is a temporary cap on international student permits for the next two years, meaning very few students will have the chance to enter Canadian institutions.
These challenges combined with pre-existing obstacles like tricky interviews and high financial requirements, add to the worries of students aiming to study abroad
But what if there was a way for Pakistani students to study at top universities abroad at a lower cost and with a simpler application process?
The good news is, there is!
Consider Malaysia
One of the significant advantages Malaysia offers to Pakistani students is its straightforward visa application process.
Unlike Western countries like the United States, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom, where the student visa application process can be complex and competitive, Malaysia has streamlined its visa process for international students.
Studying in Malaysia also doesn't require proof of financial status or attending an interview at the Malaysian embassy.
Instead, the most important factors for Pakistani students are demonstrating their academic ability, having a clear study plan and ensuring documents are in order.
Malaysia also boasts a high approval rate for student visa applications at approximately 90%. This high approval rate reduces the risk of wasting money on flight bookings and accommodation arrangements that are usually made prior to visa applications for Western countries.
Moreover, most Malaysian universities actively support international students who have the required documentation, ensuring a smooth and stress-free experience.
Visa application process
Upon receiving an offer letter from their chosen Malaysian university, Pakistani students have the option to seek university support to obtain:
Alternatively, if students prefer not to seek university assistance, they can visit the nearest Malaysian embassy and present their application letter to apply for a visa. Another option now available is the eVisa. The eVisa eligibility details and online application process can be found here.
Required documents for visa application for international students:
Some Malaysian institutions waive the requirement for an English language proficiency test certificate if the student has completed their previous education in English.
Instead, they must submit a ‘Medium of Instruction Letter’ from their previous institution confirming that the last degree pursued was fully taught in English.
The processing time for a Malaysian Student Visa ranges from 1 to 3 weeks. Once confirmed, it will be issued by the Malaysian Immigration Department.
Cost breakdown
In addition to these costs and tuition fees, students are required to have health insurance.
Students with existing health insurance should consult their educational institution, whereas those without coverage should anticipate costs ranging from MYR 468 - MYR 978 (PKR 27,700- PKR 57,800) based on the selected plan.
International students can easily calculate their application fees using the calculator provided by Education Malaysia Global Services, which can be accessed here.
Bear in mind that if you decide to have the university assist you in the process, the total fee can vary. It may include administrative charges, enrolment, registration fees and miscellaneous expenses, potentially bringing the total to a range from MYR 3,000 to MYR 3,600.
Additional benefits
i. Affordability and Accessibility: Aside from lower tuition fees across various disciplines compared to Western countries, Malaysia also offers a more affordable cost of living.

This affordability allows students from diverse financial backgrounds to pursue their education here without worrying about financial burdens.
ii. Quality Education and Diverse Academic Environment: Malaysian educational institutions are renowned for their high-quality programmes and multicultural student communities.
This diversity enriches the academic experience, exposing students to different perspectives and cultures. Whether studying business, engineering, hospitality or other fields, Malaysia offers a variety of academic programmes that are in line with international standards.
This is supported by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), which ranked Malaysia as the world's 11thmost popular education destination.
